While I’m not a master or an expert, I thought I’d look at some artists that I consider masters and analyze some of the key things that make them truly remarkable. The following are three creative artists of various kinds. For each artist I’ll choose some aspects that I think make them stand out and things that we can all learn from. Continue reading, learn, be inspired, and take what you can to apply to your own creative practice.
Alex Beadon: The Social Design Queen
Alex Beadon has created a social media friendly business that is so air-tight it’s only a matter of time before incredible success comes her way. Whether or not her style or voice is for you, it’s going to happen. She has designed (and consistently practices) a social business model that is truly remarkable.
So, what’s she doing right?
She’s established herself as an expert. – We can all provide information and value to our audience, and Alex has realized that. She put together a blog and vlog that are both filled with wonderful content and consistently updated. She offers tutorials and business lessons to other artists in a style that’s infectious and unique.
She makes it so easy to become a fan and support her. – Her website/social media is like a black hole. The first time I went there, everything seemed to lead me further and further in. This is unique because usually I’m jumping from website to website very quickly. Her site draws me in. It all does. After a minute I find myself clicking a link to her store, and I really want to buy something. Then I find myself wanting to subscribe to her YouTube channel. THEN I find myself signing up for email updates. It’s literally the best artist website and social media plan I’ve ever seen. Like I said, all she has to do is continue making excellent content, and the future is hers.
Everything looks amazing. – Everything she creates (including her videos and blog posts) always look consistent with her brand and are just plain awesome. Her store is filled with images that are gorgeous, her videos have the simple touches that make it look outstanding, her blog is written and conceptualized like an expert far beyond her years, and her creative photography is always top-notch. It makes it difficult to look away.

Nicholas Gurewitch (PBF Comics): A Master of Quality
“The Perry Bible Fellowship” is hilarious and beautifully made. Nicholas Gurewitch consistently makes people laugh with his unique style and sense of humor. I can’t get enough! His fans love him (and it’s no surprise). However, what’s interesting is how timeless the work is. I remember reading these comics years ago and coming back to only find a handful more. Still, I found myself laughing and laughing all the same. I didn’t mind that he wasn’t making new comics every week. It’s a classic case of quality vs. quantity and quality wins.
So, what’s he doing right?
Each piece is a new masterpiece. – Nicholas clearly spends a lot of time and effort on each comic. Amazingly, some of the comics are made in a COMPLETELY different different art style than the last. His skill is magnificent and it doesn’t go unnoticed. It’s the kind of craftsmanship that inevitably welcomes fandom. As an artist, you want your audience to say “wow” and be surprised whenever they see a new work. Consistency in style has it’s merits (as Alex Beadon shows), but Nick shows another angle that’s equally remarkable. A new and ever evolving style. PBF Comics are always quality and always surprising me.
It’s bursting with personality and humor. – As a comic, humor is often expected, but PBF Comics takes it to a new level. Nick’s personality and sense of humor is so potent in these. It’s inspiring how funny and well developed each idea is. As an artist, it’s so valuable to saturate your work with your own personality. It could be dark, hilarious, or something else. Whatever is in you, take that and imbue it within your work as Nicholas has done.
The timing is perfect. – So many artists want to jump right into the vision. They come up with an amazing idea and throw it in our faces. There’s a reason why people say the best part of music is the silence between the notes. Without the silence, the impact of the piece is diluted. Nicholas’ work is a perfect example of perfect timing. It has tension and release. There is a set up, and a follow through. I can look back at his comics over and over again, because they are so perfectly crafted. It’s so much more than just jokes. Every panel is so important. We could all learn to do the same, even if our work isn’t a comic.

Ronald Jenkees: Real, Passionate, Genuine
Ronald Jenkees is one of my favorite people that I’ve ever not met. He’s inspiring, prolific, and ridiculously talented. He started out as a YouTube musician who went viral and kept that attention. He writes and performs electronic music in a style you’ll likely never forget. What makes him remarkable, however, is his genuine and rare love of the art. He has always said that his motivation is to have FUN making music. He laughs a lot and and clearly has a ton of fun making his CDs. He’s the most genuinely passionate and honest musical artist I’ve ever found. Despite being a bit awkward at times, everything he does is praised by fans as if he were a God. Just take a look at the comments on his Soundcloud page. His fans would defend him to the end of the Earth.
So, what’s he doing right?
He’s having fun. – After following Ronald for a short time you’ll be able to see how much fun he’s having. This is unusual in the artistic community. So many of us are far too serious and uptight about our art. Ronald brings new breath to the creative world. His music and his videos are fun and uplifting. His personality is huge and infectious. It’s impossible not to love what he’s doing and love him as an artist. Ask any of his fans. He’s just the best! He’s having fun.
He loves to inspire his community. – I remember watching some of his earlier videos and hearing him talk a lot about the importance of having fun and learning as you go. He’s always giving us words of encouragement like, “Take your time with your music!!! It doesn’t have to be complicated.. It doesn’t have to be perfect.. It just needs to be fun (most of the time).” Ronald is genuine about music. He’s doing it for all the right reasons and encourages us to do the same. In a world filled with (to be frank) a lot of jerks, Ronald will always have a place in the creative community. He’s always inspiring us!
He shares his process. – Ronald Jenkees fans (like me) have been waiting for his 3rd CD for a long time. He never tells us when it will be done, because he’s just having fun making it. The funny thing is, we don’t really care. I mean, we want the CD, but we’re fine with Ronald taking as long as he wants because he’s sharing the process with us. A while ago he stopped making YouTube videos and starting sharing small previews of what he’s writing on Soundcloud. Because he writes, performs, records, and produces everything himself, we get to watch the CD be made as it’s happening. This is an incredible experience. It keeps us riveted and invested in Ronald’s art. As an artist, you can do the same. Share your life and your art with your community and they will love you for it.
